The Thin Red Line (1998)- Assaulting the Bunker (Part 1 of 2)

The Thin Red Line is a 1998 American epic war film written and directed by Terrence Malick. It is the second screen adaptation of the 1962 novel of the same name by James Jones, following the 1964 film; however, this film is not considered a remake. Telling a fictionalized version of the Battle of Mount Austen, which was part of the Guadalcanal Campaign in the Pacific Theater of World War II, it portrays soldiers of C Company, 1st Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, played by Sean Penn, Jim Caviezel, Nick Nolte, Elias Koteas and Ben Chaplin. The novel's title alludes to a line from Rudyard Kipling's poem "Tommy", from Barrack-Room Ballads, in which he calls British foot soldiers "the thin red line of heroes",[3] referring to the stand of the 93rd Regiment in the Battle of Balaclava of the Crimean War.

The film marked Malick's return to filmmaking after a 20-year absence. It co-stars Nick Nolte, Adrien Brody, George Clooney, John Cusack, Woody Harrelson, Elias Koteas, Jared Leto, John C. Reilly and John Travolta. Reportedly, the first assembled cut took seven months to edit and ran five hours. By the final cut, footage of performances by Bill Pullman, Lukas Haas, and Mickey Rourke had been removed (one of Rourke's scenes was included in the special features outtakes of the Criterion Blu-ray and DVD release). The film was scored by Hans Zimmer and shot by John Toll. Principal photography took place in the Australian state of Queensland and in the Solomon Islands.

The Thin Red Line received critical acclaim upon release. The film was nominated for seven Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay Based on Material Previously Produced or Published, Best Cinematography, Best Film Editing, Best Original Dramatic Score and Best Sound. It won the Golden Bear at the 1999 Berlin International Film Festival. Martin Scorsese ranked it as his second-favorite film of the 1990s. On At the Movies, Gene Siskel called it "the greatest contemporary war film I've seen".

BN Films : Sorry the scene is cut so short. YouTube is brutal with this film and only allows 3 min clips max before its blocked .
Undset Marái : Spielberg: How can I film a battle with only soldiers and a village of straw? I need tanks, bridges, planes, bunkers!!
Malick: Can I keep them then?
Nick Nick22 : Xbox and PlayStation Users Fight to see which console is superior.
Justin Headley : America was starting to cut guadalcanal off and sinking any supplies to the point where the japanese were starving and forced to live off the jungle. They were also suffering from malaria and other diseases. This scene captures these emaciated japanese putting up a last ditch effort.
Jewelry Bag : This is the closest thing you can experience to hell on earth. Absolutely sad what humans do to each other.
Precession Of The Equinoxes : You can see the fear and horror in these men's eyes. Absolutely terrible what we're made to do to each other 1:54
gilette bayonet : Ah, this scene is so damn good. The musical score, the sadness, the beautiful scenery, the ultra realistic sounds of warfare. Everything is just there. You have the anonymity of each character, each soldier who all look the same but are fighting their own demons as well as the Japanese who look deathly, malnourished, and ill. The low toned monologues add to what each person is thinking. It's a darkly poetic film and Terrence Malick's best in my opinion.
Serpico09 : I really miss these historical epics that Malick used to make like this and also The New World.
CF1964 : The most underrated war film ever
illerac84 : Is someone laughing at 1:42?
